In recent years, the university has witnessed a continuous increase in both the quantity and quality of research outputs in the field of social sciences (comprehensive), ranking among the top 1% globally in the ESI (Essential Science Indicators). As of February 28,2025, a total of 581 historical research papers have been indexed by ESI, with a total citation count of 5,884, resulting in an average of 10.13 citations per paper. In the subject ranking for Business and Economics, the university is positioned between 201-250, making it the highest-ranked institution in Macao for this discipline. In the field of law, a total of 424 papers have been published, including 33 papers in SCI/SSCI/AHCI journals, and there are 391 Chinese papers in the CNKI database, of which 77 are published in PKU core or CSSCI journals.
Additionally, the Chinese Academy of History and Fudan University have established the Macao Research Center for History and the Macao Research Center for Media at the University of Science and Technology of Macao, respectively. They are also undertaking key projects under the National Social Science Fund, such as the research project titled The Macao Model of Mutual Learning between Chinese and Western Civilizations, as well as significant national academic and cultural initiatives under the14th Five-Year Plan, including the project (Revised) General History of China: History of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan; History of Macao. Furthermore, they host international academic events such as the Xiangshan Cultural Forum, the China- Portuguese-speaking Countries Civilization Mutual Learning Forum, and the Macao International Communication Week.
In terms of publishing, the university's journal includes the Journal of the University of Science and Technology of Macau (Humanities and Social Sciences Edition). Other field-specific publications such as Macau Studies, Research on Tang Ting-shu, and Research on Zheng Guanying also have a profound impact on the academic community.
