In response to the national "peak carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060" goals, as well as the needs of ecological civilization construction, Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) has established a team led by President Joseph Hun-wei LEE, with a multidisciplinary background and international high-level research and teaching capabilities. This team relies on the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering of the faculty of Innovation Engineering, the Macau Environmental Research Institute, and the first national-level field observation research station outside the mainland, "National Observation and Research Station of Coastal Ecological Environments in Macao", as well as “The Key Laboratory of River Basin Digital Twinning of Ministry of Water Resources”. MUST has built a comprehensive talent training system and a scientific research innovation platform ranging from undergraduate to doctoral levels. It actively engages in innovative research with interdisciplinary integration in the fields of environmental hydraulics and coastal water quality simulation technology, integrated intelligent monitoring technology for Macau's ecological environment that covers "sky, ground, and sea," coastal zone ecological environment risk assessment and early warning technology, environmental quality evolution processes and regulation mechanisms, ecological environmental effects and control technology for typical pollutants, as well as urban solid waste recycling and management. With a focus on Macau, facing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and serving the national strategy, this discipline has already made significant contributions to local and regional ecological environmental protection, pollution control, and environmental quality improvement.

According to the statistics from the "Essential Science Indicators" (ESI) database published by Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters), the environmental/ecology discipline of Macau University of Science and Technology has entered the top 1% of global universities and research institutions in the relevant subject field.
