With the development of science and technology, the materials industry has permeated into various areas of the national economy, national defense infrastructure, and social life. It is the foundation on top of which high and emerging technology industries grow, and therefore it plays a tremendous role in the development of the national economy. With the aim to adapt the challenging needs of Macao Society, Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) built up the Macao Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (MIMISE) under the leadership of Chair Professor Shuit-Tong Lee, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World. MIMSE is guided by the Strategic Development Outline of the Macao SAR Government for the Greater Bay Area as well as the Research Development Plan of MUST. MIMSE has established an international high-level faculty team including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and national high-level talents, a high-level scientific research platform, and is mainly oriented to the fields of artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, biomedicine and comprehensive health, which falls in the categories of information display, optoelectronics, flexible electronics, wearable intelligent sensors, biomedical materials, nano-catalysis and energy materials, functional surfaces and interfaces, and materials genome etc to provide high-quality research results for the development of national science and technology innovation.

MUST’s ranks in the fields of Materials Science have entered the top 1% of global universities and scientific research institutions in relevant subject fields of “Essential Science Indicators (ESI)” by Clarivate Analytics (former Thomson Reuters).
